Origins and development

Following a 1912 design competition, work on the first 18 hectares began in 1913. The grounds were consecrated in 1914 and officially opened in 1916.

Origins: Consecration and first burial took place in 1914; the official opening followed in 1916. The cemetery is in Brühlervorstadt, at Binderslebener Landstraße 75, 99092 Erfurt. Its area is approximately 57 hectares.

Design and present-day character

A park-like central cemetery with 54 burial sections, several ceremony halls, a crematorium and extensive honorary-grove and memorial complexes.

Read this character description together with the development of Erfurt Main Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
